Chris Iannetta, Mariners offense deliver on Jackie Robinson Day

4/15 at NYY by TOM HAYDEN

What a night it was on Friday night as the Mariners, coming off of a Walk-Off win on Wednesday, took control in the Bronx to defeat the New York Yankees, 7-1. After the fourth inning, the Mariners scored at least a run in each inning for the rest of the ballgame.

C Chris Iannetta combined for 3 hits in 3 at bats, sending in 3 RBI. All last season, Mariners catchers only reached base 3 times in 3 games. Iannetta has also proven defensively as he has been a wall of a catcher letting little go by him. Chris has a total of 8 hits so far this season with 2 HR and 5 RBI. Also proving at the plate after a tough start to 2016 is 1B Adam Lind. Lind delivered a clutch RBI on his 2-hit night. 2B Robinson Canó and RF Nelson Cruz also each had 2 hits on the night.

Defensively, RHP Nathan Karns made his second start as an M. Karns struck out a solid 7 batters on the night, only giving up 5 hits, 4 walks and 1 run (earned). In for relief of Karns was RHP Tony Zych, LHP Vidal Nuño, RHP Joel Peralta and LHP Mike Montgomery. Combined the Mariners bullpen gave up NO runs and struck out a promising 4 batters on the night.

The M's are back for more Saturday, 4/16 for Game 2 in the Bronx. RHP Felix Hernandez (The KING) (0-1, 0.69 ERA) will face veteran NYY LHP CC Sabathia (1-0, 4.50 ERA). With Sabathia being a lefty, expect to see Dae -Ho Lee at first base in the lineup in place of Adam Lind, with also a possibility of seeing Luis Sardinas in the lineup.
