The Mariners (19-13, 1st place in AL West by 1.5 G) defeated the now 15-15 Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night, and snapped Tampa's 4-game win streak. RHP Felix Hernandez made his seventh start of 2016, and earned himself the 146th win of his career, making him the only Mariners pitcher in history to do so. Offensively, the M's backed up Felix on the mound. SS Ketel Marte (.297 AVG) had one of the best games of his career, going 4-5 with 4 hits, 2 2B, and a 3-run HR (his first of the season) to break the tie with the Rays and help the M's get the win.
RHP Felix Hernandez (2.27 ERA) went 7.0 innings giving up 2 runs on 4 hits (all earned), while striking out 4 on the night. Hernandez now has a record of 3-2 in 7 starts so far this season with the M's. In relief, RHP Joel Peralta (.263 ERA) (1-0 record) and RHP closer Steve Cishek (1.06 ERA) (2-1 record) tossed the next 2 innings. Relief combined for 4 Ks, while giving up nothing else but 1 walk. Cishek earned himself his tenth save of the season, something he has been successful with a lot so far this year.
Offensively the M's combined for 9 hits on the night. As I said before, SS Ketel Marte shined at the plate going 4-5 with 4 hits, 2 doubles, a single and a 3-run HR to break the 2-2 tie. Marte was a triple shy of a cycle. 1B Dae-Ho Lee (.286 AVG) had a 2-hit night, going 2-3 at the plate. DH Nelson Cruz (.261 AVG) didn't record a hit on Monday night but did have another Mariner RBI.
The M's and Rays will play Game 2 baseball on Tuesday night. First pitch start time- 7:10 PM PAC, 10:10 PM ET. LHP Wade Miley (2-2, 4.74 ERA) will make his seventh start of 2016 facing TB LHP Drew Smyly (1-3, 2.72 ERA). Expect to see Dae-Ho Lee at 1B in the lineup because Smyly is a lefty, in place of Adam Lind. Watch this one on ROOT Sports NW™ or listen in on 710 ESPN Seattle!
