Walker has solid outing on the hill, but Mariners drop Game 1 of series to Oakland

The M's were defeated on Monday night by the visiting Oakland Athletics in Game 1 of what will be a 3-game series. RHP Taijuan Walker had a decent night on the mound, but offensively, bats failed to produce in the 5-0 loss. With the loss, the Mariners now have a record of 26-18, but are still 1.5 games above the Texas Rangers for a first place spot in the American League West.

Offensively, the Mariners put up 9 hits on the night. CF Leonys Martin (.259 AVG), who was in the lineup at lead-off, continues to stay hot as he put up a 2-hit night. Martin went 2-4 at the plate. DH Nelson Cruz (.280 AVG) also connected for 2 hits on the night for the M's.

On the hill, RHP Taijuan Walker made his ninth start of 2016. Walker went 7.1 innings giving up 5 runs on 4 hits (only 1 earned run) while striking out a solid 6 Athletics on the night. Walker unfortunately suffered the loss, and now has a W-L record of 2-4, and an ERA of 2.70. LHP Vidal Nuño (1.29 ERA), RHP Joel Peralta (4.26 ERA), and RHP Steve Johnson (1.29 ERA) all tossed in relief. Relief combined to give up only 3 hits, 2 walks and 0 runs while striking out 2 A's.

The Mariners and Athletics will play Game 2 on Tuesday night, May 24th; a 7:10 PM PAC, 10:10 PM ET first pitch start time. RHP Nathan Karns (4-1, 3.33 ERA) and the M's will face OAK RHP Kendall Graveman (1-6, 5.48 ERA). This will be Karns' ninth start of 2016.
