PETCO PARK, SAN DIEGO, CA. ----

The Mariners were defeated by the San Diego Padres on Wednesday night at Petco Park by a score of 14-6. Winning the first 2 games of the 4-game home-road series in Seattle, the Mariners sought 3 straight wins against the Padres on Wednesday, but came up short. After RHP Felix Hernandez was placed on the 15-day DL with a right calf-strain, the M's made the move of calling up LHP James Paxton from AAA Tacoma to fill the spot. Paxton unfortunately took a tough loss in his 2016 MLB debut on Wednesday night.

Paxton made his first start of the 2016 MLB season in this one. Paxton went only 3.2 innings giving up 8 runs on 10 hits (only 3 earned) while walking only 1 and striking out a solid 7 Padres on the night. James unfortunately suffered the loss in his first start (0-1) and now has an ERA of 7.36. We all know what James Paxton can do, and he has been great with the M's in the past, so there should be nothing alarming about his trough first start or his call-up from AAA Tacoma. Paxton was relieved by RHP Joel Peralta (5.40 ERA), RHP Steve Johnson (2.92 ERA), RHP Nick Vincent (2.35 ERA) and RHP closer Steve Cishek (2.59 ERA). Relief combined to give up 6 runs on 9 hits while striking out 6 Padres on the night. Cishek gave up 1 hit, and struckout 2 in his outing of 1 inning.

The Mariners offensively combined for 13 hits on the night. 2B Robinson Canó (.289 AVG) connected for his sixteenth HR of the season on Wednesday night, a 3-run BLAST to put Seattle up early in this one. After scoring 25 runs in the first 2 games against San Diego, it sure looked like it was going to be all Seattle M's again on Wednesday night again at the plate. That 1 hit and 3 RBI for Canó was his only of the night though however as he went 1-5 at the plate. LF Franklin Gutierrez (.253 AVG), 1B Dae-Ho Lee (.275 AVG), and SS Luis Sardiñas (.204 AVG) each had 2-hit nights for the M's. 3B Kyle Seager (.287 AVG) went 4-5 at the plate while scoring 2 runs on 4 hits.

The Mariners and Padres will finish up this 4-game home-road series in San Diego on Thursday night. LHP Wade Miley (5-2, 4.95 ERA) will make his eleventh start of the year and will face SD RHP Colin Rea (3-2, 4.47 ERA).
