6/6 vs CLE by TOM HAYDEN

SAFECO FIELD, SEATTLE, WA. ----

The Mariners were narrowly defeated on Monday night by the AL Central leading Cleveland Indians by a score of 3-1. This one was certainly a pitchers duel for both CLE RHP Trevor Bauer and our very own LHP James Paxton each had 10 strikeouts on the night. For James Paxton, he came into the game after a troubling start last week in San Diego, but proved he was capable to stay up in the bigs in place of Felix Hernandez on Monday night. With the loss, however, the M's now find themselves with a W-L record of 31-26 and are now 4.0 games back of the AL West leading Texas Rangers.

On Monday night, Mariners offense only managed to put up 5 hits. CF Nori Aoki (.248 AVG) went 2-4 on the night grabbing 2 hits and an RBI.  SS Ketel Marte (.277 AVG) made his return off of the 15-day DL (thumb) on Monday night and got a hit for himself in his first AB back. Marte then went on to steal his sixth stolen base of the season, then came around to score the Mariners only run of the night. RF Nelson Cruz (.288 AVG) and 3B Kyle Seager (.288 AVG) each also put up a hit each on the night. Each of them connected for a double, Cruz's tenth double of the season and Seager's fifteenth of the season.

On the mound, LHP James Paxton made his second start of the season. Paxton had a decent outing going 6.0 innings while striking out 10 Indians on the night. James gave up 3 runs on 5 hits (1 earned run) while walking only 1. Unfortunately, Paxton suffered his second loss of the season in his second start and is now 0-2 with an ERA of 3.72. In relief of Paxton was recent call-up, making his MLB debut on Monday night, Mr. Edwin Diaz. Diaz tossed 1 perfect inning giving up nothing and striking out 1. His ERA of course is a fresh 0.00. Also relieving Paxton was LHP Mike Montgomery. Montgomery (2.23 ERA), tossed the eighth and ninth innings giving up nothing while striking out 3 Indians in his outing.

The Mariners will look to end their 4-game losing streak and also end Cleveland's 6-game winning streak on Tuesday night in Seattle for Game 2 of this 4-game series. LHP Wade Miley will make his twelfth start of the season for the M's. With a freshly shaven beard, Miley (5-2, 5.85 ERA) and the Mariners will face CLE RHP Cody Anderson (1-3, 6.81 ERA). Catch Game 2 action on ROOT Sports NW or listen in on 710 ESPN Seattle. First pitch start time- 7:10 PM PAC, 10:10 PM ET!

This is Tom Hayden signing off saying Go Mariners! Stay #TrueToTheBlue.
