Rays walk-off walk on Mariners in thirteenth inning

6/15 at TB by TOM HAYDEN

The Mariners were defeated by the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday night by a score of 3-2 after 13 innings of play. The two teams battled for the win from the sixth inning on, until the Rays officially captured it in the bottom of the thirteenth inning on a bases loaded walk. LHP Mike Montgomery gave up the walk to TB 1B (Former Mariner) Logan Morrison with 1 out and bases loaded on the inning. With the loss, the Mariners have fallen to 34-31 and are 6.5 games in back of the Texas Rangers who sit atop first place of the American League West at 42-25.

On the mound, RHP Nathan Karns made his thirteenth start of 2016 against his former ball club. Karns had himself a great outing going 5.0 innings giving up only 2 runs on 4 hits (all earned) while walking only 2 and striking out 8 Rays! Nathan didn't suffer the loss, therefore he maintains a W-L record of 5-2, and now has an ERA of 4.06. Relieving Karns were LHP Vidal Nuño (1.44 ERA), RHP Joaquin Benoit (3.95 ERA), RHP Nick Vincent (2.90 ERA), RHP closer Steve Cishek (2.70 ERA), and LHP Mike Montgomery (2.72 ERA). Nuno suffered his first blown save of the season as he gave up 2 walks and 3 hits in 2.0 innings of work. Mike Montgomery suffered his third loss of the season and now has a W-L record of 2-3 in 25 appearances, 36.1 innings pitched.

Offensively the Mariners put up 8 hits on the night. DH Nelson Cruz (.300 AVG) connected for his sixteenth homer of the year in the fourth inning off of TB P Drew Smyly, a 2-run blast to put the Mariners up at the time. Cruz had the only Seattle RBIs on the night. He now has 46 RBI on the season, and trails 2B Robinson Canó who leads the team with 51 RBI. C Chris Iannetta (.236 AVG) and CF Leonys Martin (.255 AVG) each had 2-hit nights. For Iannetta, he connected for 2 doubles on the night and now has 9 doubles on the season.

The Mariners will look to avoid a sweep on Thursday afternoon as Seattle and Tampa Bay will play some series finale baseball, before we head off to Boston, of course. LHP James Paxton will make his fourth start of the season, still in the spot of the injured RHP felix Hernandez (strained right calf). Paxton (0-2, 2.86 ERA) and the M's will face TB prospect LHP Blake Snell (0-0, 0.00 ERA). Catch this one on ROOT Sports NW or listen in on 710 ESPN Seattle. First pitch start time- 10:10 AM PAC, 1:10 PM ET!
