On a beautiful Fourth of July Monday in Houston, the Mariners dropped Game 1 of the 3-game series in what was a great pitching matchup. LHP Wade Miley and HOU RHP Lance McCullers squared off for an Independence day duel, which unfortunately was won by McCullers and the 'Stros by a close score of 2-1. Offensively, the Mariners only connected for 5 hits off of McCullers. With the loss, the Mariners are now with a W-L record of 43-40 on the season. Seattle is 8.5 games in back of the 52-32 Texas Rangers and 1.0 game in back of the 44-39 Houston Astros in the American League West standings.

On the mound on Monday afternoon, LHP Wade Miley took the ball for his fifteenth start of the 2016 season. Wade went 6.2 innings giving up 2 runs on 7 hits (all runs earned) while walking 2 and striking out 2 Astros, while giving up a HR in his outing. Miley unfortunately suffered the loss, and now has a W-L record on the season of 6-5 with an ERA of 5.36. Relieving Miley were RHP Tom Wilhelmsen (9.51 ERA) who went 1.0 inning giving up only 1 hit, and LHP David Rollins (0.00 ERA) who only went 1/3 of the eighth inning, giving up no hits and 2 walks.

Offensively on Monday afternoon, the Mariners were only able to put up 5 hits on HOU RHP Lance McCullers. 3B Kyle Seager (.274 AVG) went 2-3 at the plate, scoring the 1 Mariner run via his 23rd double of the season. It was 1B Dae-Ho Lee (.294 AVG) who connected for a base hit scoring Seager for an RBI, his 36th of the year. CF Leonys Martin (.251 AVG) went 1-4 on the day with his first triple of the season. 2B Robinson Canó (.303 AVG) connected for the fifth Mariner hit of the day.

Seattle will look to bounce back from the tough Game 1 Fourth of July loss on Tuesday night, as the Mariners and Astros are set and ready to play Game 2; a 5:10 PM PAC, 8:10 PM ET start time. RHP Taijuan Walker, who was fantastic in his last start vs BAL, will take the ball for his sixteenth start of the 2016 season. Walker (4-6, 3.29 ERA) and the M's will face HOU LHP Dallas Keuchel (5-9, 5.13 ERA). Be sure to catch all of the Game 2 action on ROOT Sports NW for watching, or listen in on 710 ESPN Seattle radio!
