Walker's foot injury still and issue in 5-2 loss to 'Stros

The Mariners were narrowly defeated by the now 45-39 Houston Astros on Tuesday night at Minute Maid Park in Houston. RHP Taijuan Walker's start ended quicker than expected, as he only went 4.0 innings due to right foot tendinitis. Walker has been placed on the 15-day DL because of this. Offensively, Seattle put up 7 hits on the evening but went 0-7 with runners in scoring position and left 6 on base. With the loss, the Mariners have fallen to 43-41 on the season and are now 9.5 games in back of the 53-32 Texas Rangers, and 2.0 games behind these 45-39 Houston Astros in the American League West standings.

Offensively on Tuesday night in Houston, the Mariners connected for 7 hits. 3B Kyle Seager (.277 AVG) extended his hit streak to 8 games with 2 hits going 2-4 on the night at the plate. Seager connected for his 24th double of the season, this one off of HOU LHP Dallas Keuchel. C Chris Iannetta (.229 AVG) went 1-3 on the day and drove in one of Seattle's runs with a ground out fielders choice, scoring Dae-Ho Lee. Iannetta now has 21 RBI on the season. DH Nelson Cruz (.281 AVG) went 1-3 at the plate and connected for his 22nd HR of the season, a solo blast to center for the other Mariner run. Cruz now has 57 RBI on the season so far.

On the mound on Tuesday night, RHP Taijuan Walker made his sixteenth start of 2016. His outing ended quickly, only 4.0 innings in, as he left due to right foot discomfort. It was later announced that Walker is suffering right foot tendinitis and has been placed on the 15-day DL. Unfortunately, Walker suffered the loss on Tuesday night (now 4-7 on the season) as he went the 4.0 innings giving up 5 runs on 5 hits (all earned) while striking out 6 and walking 1 Astro. Taijuan gave up 3 HR, which totaled to be all of Houston's runs on the night. Relieving Walker was LHP Mike Montgomery (2.15 ERA) who pitched well. Montgomery made his 30th appearance of 2016 on Tuesday night. Mike went 4.0 innings giving up 0 runs on only 2 hits. Montgomery struck out 2 and walked 1 in his outing.

The M's will look to avoid a sweep on Wednesday night as the Astros and Mariners will play series finale baseball, Game 3 of this 3-game series. LHP Wade LeBlanc (1-0, 1.50 ERA) will make his third start in a Mariners uniform. LeBlanc has pitched very well in his previous 2 starts with the M's and even earned a win in his last start (7/1 vs BAL). LeBlanc and the M's will face HOU RHP Mike Fiers (6-3, 4.12 ERA).
