The Mariners were defeated on Saturday night by the Los Angeles Angels by a final score of 10-3. Angels offense jumped on RHP Taijuan Walker and the M's early, and did hard, putting up 6 runs in the first inning, as well as 3 home runs. Kole Calhoun, Mike Trout, and Albert Pujols went back-to-back-to-back in the first inning. Calhoun and Pujols then went on to each homer again in the ball game. Offensively, the Mariners were only able to answer with 3 runs, as Franklin Gutierrez and Nelson Cruz each went deep. With the loss, the Mariners have fallen to 69-66 on the season, now 12.0 games behind the Texas Rangers in the American League Western division. Seattle is now 4.5 games back in that American League Wild Card race.
Offensively on Saturday night, the Mariners put up 3 runs on 9 hits. RF Franklin Gutierrez (.248 AVG) had himself a night going 2-for-3 at the dish with a 2-run homer. The homer was Guti's 13th of the season, and the 2 RBI now gives him 36 on the season. DH Nelson Cruz (.279 AVG) connected for his 34th homer of the season, a solo blast in the bottom of the fourth inning. The RBI now gives Cruz 81 on the season! 2B Robinson Canó (.302 AVG) went 1-for-4 with his 30th double of the season. LF Ben Gamel (.143 AVG), 1B Dae-Ho Lee (.260 AVG), and C Mike Zunino (.223 AVG) each had a base hit single in this one. 3B Kyle Seager (.289 AVG) went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles on the day for Seattle.
On the mound, RHP Taijuan Walker made his 20th start of the season on Saturday night. Walker went just 0.2 innings giving up 6 runs on 6 hits (5 runs earned) while walking none and striking out 1 in his outing. Taijuan suffered his 10th loss of the season, and now has an individual W-L record of 4-10 on the season with an ERA of 4.60 in 103.2 innings pitched to date. In immediate relief for Seattle was SHP Pat Venditte (6.75 ERA) who went 4.1 innings giving up 4 runs on 6 hits (all runs earned) while walking 1 and striking out 1 Angel on the night. Venditte gave up a pair of home runs in this one. RHP Steve Cishek (3.40 ERA) and LHP Vidal Nuño (3.64 ERA) tossed the rest of the ball game. Cishek tossed a blank frame in 1.0 inning of work while Nuño gave up just 1 walk in 3.0 innings of work.
