Mariners edge past Athletics 2-1 in series finale

It was a hot and great day for baseball Sunday as the division rivals Seattle Mariners and Oakland A's were set to finalize the series from Coliseum.

LHP Mike Montgomery (4-2, 1.62 ERA) who has been solid as of late came into Sunday's game looking to tie the series in Oakland 2-2. In impressive fashion, Montgomery only allowed six hits and one run. Sam Fuld connected for a solo HR early, which was Oakland's only run of the day. Mike Montgomery continues to improve as a member of the Seattle Mariners. To finish the game, Mark Lowe, Joe Beimel and Fernando Rodney pitched for the M's. Rodney tossed his sixteenth save of the season.

Offensively it was RF Seth Smith who put up Seattle's two runs with a two-out RBI that sent in Robinson Canó and All-Star DH Nelson Cruz. Seth Smith continues to add upon his .257 BA.

The 38-44 Mariners now head home Monday to face the 41-40 Detroit Tigers. RHP Hisashi Iwakuma, who has been down in AAA Tacoma dealing with a hand injury, is coming back Monday night. Iwakuma looks as if he should be ready to play after weeks of rehabilitation of the throwing hand. You're going to want to catch this one, for Hisashi has been waiting for this moment for weeks now.
